Why Weather Traders Must Watch the Aug 24 NOAA Migration on Polymarket and Other News

Polymarket posted a batch of clarifications on August 21 that will affect anyone trading geopolitics, weather, and high frequency markets. The updates cover an Iran resolution that has now been settled, a weather data source switch that starts August 24, and the dispute that is currently dominating the developer channel.

Clarifications: Iran Market Resolved YES

The question "Will Iran target an Arab country on August 17, 2026?" was resolved YES. Per the bulletin, a drone attack targeted Kurdistan Regional Government members in Iraq on August 17, and the totality of available information from the KRG, the Counter Terrorism Unit, the governments of Bahrain and the UAE, and credible reporting confirms the attack originated from Iranian territory. The order book was cleared at 5:30 PM ET on August 21.

For traders, the takeaway is about resolution, not just news. As explained in how prediction markets work from contracts to payouts, a market resolves on its stated source and wording, not on how the headline is later summarized. Here the bulletin defined the source stack explicitly, and that definition is what settled the market.

Weather Markets: Wunderground to NOAA Starting August 24

Admin ak504111 announced that daily temperature markets will migrate from Wunderground to NOAA starting August 24. Moscow, Tel Aviv, and Istanbul already used NOAA. Hong Kong will stay with its Observatory source.

The move follows a Seoul incident where Wunderground recorded a fake or incorrect 27C observation while actual METAR showed 28C, causing user losses. That kind of source error is exactly why weather prediction markets need a clear station and source rule before you trade.

Community members flagged two follow on risks. User user_v123 noted that NOAA default 5 minute observations versus hourly could affect high or low resolution for US cities, and that international stations have a display bug when show hourly data is selected. User sendokgp warned that Taipei RCSS has incomplete routine readings on weather.gov. Rewards were also noted as activated on daily rain, tornado risk, and weekly drought markets. For the broader seasonal context behind those markets, see how El Nino is shaping Kalshi weather markets through 2027. If you trade US highs and lows after August 24, check whether your market resolves on the 5 minute or hourly print before you size the position.

Monthly Earthquake Market: Faster Resolution Coming

Ak504111 confirmed that monthly earthquake market rules will be updated next month to allow resolution based on occurrence without waiting the full extension period. That change will reduce dead capital on markets that have already met their condition, a detail covered in the glossary of 50 plus prediction market terms under resolution and extension. Until the new language is live, the current rules still apply.

Disputes: Rebategate Dominates With No Official Response

The developer channel remains focused on rebategate, the alleged 80 percent taker rebate. As of August 21 there has been no official response from Polymarket.

Researcher minglee123xd conducted on chain tracing and identified three entities receiving 80 percent taker rebates: Jump Trading with wallet 0x0cb, Bonereaper, and one unidentified firm. All other wallets on the published 20 plus list appear to be the same owner. User little_gradient noted that per Bloomberg, Jump received equity stakes in Polymarket in exchange for providing liquidity, suggesting the rebate may be tied to that arrangement.

Community anger centers on three points. First, Polymarket said thousands of emails were sent to recruit experiment participants, while top 30 takers by volume report receiving nothing. Second, the team has remained silent while the dispute spread. Third, the 50 millisecond taker delay, which user moznoadam notes has consistently hurt makers since implementation, compounds the rebate advantage. Users are now calling the situation rebategate and speculating about contacting external investigators.

Until Polymarket publishes terms, traders should treat the 80 percent tier as alleged and use the public tier table as the verified baseline.
